Rosa's Birthday Celebration
Earlier this month Rosa held a party at the beautiful Sadler's Wells Theatre.
With support from KPMG, Rosa recently celebrated its first birthday. Surrounded by friends, donors, and colleagues from women’s organisations we were thrilled to share Rosa’s successes from the past year and our plans for the future.
Guests heard from Rosa’s first grantees, projects working on the issue of Body Image. Fourteen year old Omena Osivwemu from Feminists Webs wowed the audience with her thoughts on feminism and young women, Lina Johansson from Mimbre shared her hopes for the company’s acrobalance dance workshops with young girls, and Ffion Evans from the Powerhouse discussed how their project will examine the impact of Body Image on women with learning difficulties.
Guest Speaker Susie Orbach honed in on the beauty industry and the insurmountable pressures it places on women and girls. She cited the Body Image projects as positive ways forward to combat the impact.
Rosa’s Chair of Trustees Maggie Baxter shared some of our future plans – including grants for projects working on the issue of Female Genital Mutilation and sponsorship of the Women Creating Change Award, in partnership with the Shelia McKechnie Foundation, which will provide bespoke mentoring and support to a standout female campaigner.
The evening was also an opportunity for guests to celebrate women in their lives through the beautiful Celebrate Her tapestry, created by artist Lucy Newholm. By the end of the night it was adorned with roses, each added to celebrate a woman and in exchange for a donation to Rosa. The roses can now be seen in our online garden where we’ll soon be adding some of the inspirational messages celebrating these women.
We’d like to thank everyone who came (despite a tube strike on the evening!) and continue to support Rosa’s work. We hope you left as inspired by the Body Image projects and excited about Rosa’s future as us.
A special thanks also to Gianna Goulding, our fantastic Event Intern, and the many volunteers who helped on the evening.
You can view photos from the event on our Flikr page.
