WHY I GIVE

Anne Donaldson lives in Rutland with her husband John and their two dogs, Mollie and Liquorice. She has two grown-up sons and has supported Rosa since her launch in 2008.

Giving

I got involved with Rosa because I was interested in helping women and girls to have a better life. I was brought up in a very loving and secure family, and although we weren’t well off I always felt very fortunate to be surrounded by Uncles, Aunts, cousins and close friends. My church has also always been very supportive and important in my life. Because I was so fortunate I wanted to help others who had less and to share whatever little I could afford. This often meant giving my time. Sometimes people just need someone to talk to. I’m very happy that as well as being personally involved, I’m now able to support various charities financially.

Inspiration

Throughout my life I’ve been inspired by my mother, a very hard-working, generous, loving and caring person who looked after her family and anybody who needed help. She had no money to give away but gave her time and compassion. Another woman who inspired me was Mary Connor our domestic help who was very poor but would have given her last penny to anybody in need. So no famous names, just two very strong and wonderful women.

The Future

I am very happy with my life and wouldn’t want to change anything at the moment. I’m looking forward to walking my dogs in the countryside, spending some time in my garden, and travelling with my husband to Italy. I hope the new government will help all citizens but in particular those in need including women in crisis and senior citizens, and that they protect us from crime and help people in inner cities by providing some kind of work or community projects to make it worth getting up in the morning. To help people regain pride in themselves. It would be a dream of mine (and I’m sure many other people) to somehow stop starvation in the world, particularly in Africa and to stop oppression of women in the developing world. They have but one life but no life because they have no freedom.

Parting Words

The best advice I’ve been given is to treat others as you would like to be treated yourself and take time to listen to others.
